Tips to a Happy & Healthy Vagina

Vagina health

The way to a healthy vagina isn’t a one-step process. Fortunately, this organ requires minimal care. So, to keep it healthy, remember that less is more. A healthy vagina depends on your age and its pH level, among other factors. Here are some things to keep in mind to maintain a healthy, happy vagina!

Good Hygiene, FTW!

Don’t fall for ads that promote vaginal products for a ‘summery fresh’ vagina. They may actually do more harm than good. Vaginas are designed to keep themselves clean. All you need to do to maintain their natural pH level is—clean them with water and gentle soap. If you must still use wipes or washes, ensure they’re non-scented and free of harsh chemicals. Also, don’t forget to wipe your vagina gently after peeing, or post sex. If your vagina has an unpleasant odour, please get yourself examined by your gynaecologist.

Practice Safe Sex

Using condoms during sex helps protect against sexually-transmitted infections (STIs) like herpes, genital warts, chlamydia, syphilis, gonorrhea, HIV, etc. Some of these diseases have no cure. Change condoms when switching from oral to anal sex to vaginal sex. Avoid sharing your toys with your partner to prevent the spread of STIs.

Regular Check-Ups

See your gynaecologist and get yourself examined on a regular basis. Women aged 21 and older should get a Pap smear done every 3 years, regardless of sexual history. If you have a family history of breast cancer, get yourself screened once in 3 years. Get a breast examination done once a year.

Use Lubrication

While vaginal lubrication occurs naturally, some women do not produce enough. Lubrication is very important when having sex. Without it, there are chances of your labia or vagina becoming irritated. To prevent this, use a water-based lube to reduce friction and increase pleasure. Doctors advise against using petroleum jelly or baby oil as that can cause inflammation.

Clothing

Cotton underwear is the way to go for a healthy vagina. It is breathable and absorbs moisture, which basically reduces the chances of getting bacterial infections. If you experience a lot of dampness throughout the day, carry a change of underwear.

All About The Pubes

While trimming your pubic hair is okay, avoid over-landscaping your hair down there. Your pubes protect you from bacteria. Besides, shaving or waxing can often could lead to ingrown hair, friction-related issues, and itching as the hair grows back.

Look After Your Health

The condition of your overall health affects the health of your vagina. Eat healthy, exercise regularly, and maintain a healthy weight. Women with diabetes are more prone to yeast infections or urinary tract infections (UTIs), so they should take extra care. Do your kegel exercises regularly to strengthen your pelvic floor muscles. They help improve your bladder function and are even known to make your orgasms stronger!
